Writing is often perceived as difficult both by foreign and by English-speaking students. If you don’t follow the logical step-by-step rule things can get a bit messy.
Luckily, in English, there’s a clearly preordered structure you can follow when writing an essay or any other piece of wiring for that matter. The Hamburger Chart is a delicious way to make sure you never forget this rule while studying English in Melbourne!
Let’s dig in!
Topic Introduction/sentence
The first part of the hamburger is the introduction – the top bun. Here you’re supposed to bring out your most important statement. What’s my argument? What’s my main idea for writing this? Simply answer these questions and you’ll have your topic introduction.
Supporting details – 1, 2 & 3
Supporting details are equally as important because they make the body of the paragraph. They bring the main statement closer to the reader and reveal the motives, and reasons behind the topic statement. As the name itself indicates, they support the main idea.
You can have 1, 2, 3 or even more supporting details. These can be certain facts, statistics, numbers, logical explanations, something from your own experience and much more. Keep each supporting sentence to focus on theme/topic.
Conclusion
In the conclusion (the bottom bun) you sum up everything said before and say it in a more cohesive and coherent way. It’s important to emphasize that you shouldn’t introduce anything new in the conclusion, but rather repeat what you had already said but in a summarised format.
