“Bigger Than Xmas” is the logo of this year’s Good Beer Week. Heading into colder climates, with winter not too far away, this is pretty smart advertising by the event’s team. If we think about that period of the year in Australia, when almost the whole country goes into meltdown for six weeks – the sun is strong and cold beer is probably flowing like the Yarra. So why choose a more blustery time of year for a beer festival?
Perhaps it’s because so many Melburnians are out of town over Christmas and New Year. Perhaps it’s because as in Europe, good beer should be served at its perfect temperature, leaving hotter days to enjoy the more chilled ales. What is guaranteed is nine days of a deliciously wide range of craft and independent beers, from the 13th to the 22nd of May. Plus these thirst-mongering thoughts that such a choice of malty, hoppy, mild and biting brews – available from established as well as up-and-coming micro-breweries from across the world – is incredibly exciting!
There are many events planned for the festival, across not only Melbourne’s inner city pubs and brew houses, but spanning to Berwick and Geelong, Eltham to Mornington; to spread the beer love. Wherever you live, there will be somewhere in nearby suburbs with a Good Beer Week promotion occurring.
As well as the draught, canned and bottled delights which can be savoured, Good Beer Week is also stocked and ready with enough food stations to complement the taste of all liquids on offer. In addition, not every event requires a paid ticket. The event guide on the website will give you a great choice of bars for tastings and samples of what’s on offer.
